Goldberg received a connection request from a Signal user identifying as Michael Waltz, leading to his inclusion in the group. The messages included discussion of timing and targets for the operation.

President Trump stated he had no knowledge of the incident. The messages' authenticity is being reviewed by the National Security Council. The incident has drawn attention due to the sensitive nature of the information shared and the potential security implications.
