UPMC Memorial Shooting: Officer Killed, Multiple Injured

A shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, on Saturday resulted in the death of West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte and injuries to five others. The shooter, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, was killed at the scene after holding staff hostage in the ICU.

Archangel-Ortiz entered the hospital carrying a handgun and zip ties, targeting the ICU, where he had recent contact regarding another individual. Three hospital staff members (a doctor, nurse, and custodian) and three police officers were shot. The other officers and staff members are reportedly in stable condition.

Officer Duarte, a veteran law enforcement officer who joined the West York Borough Police Department in 2022, was fatally shot during the incident. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the motive. Governor Josh Shapiro has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the fallen officer.
